Among the 2,371 wells reporting depth, the median is 90 feet and the middle half fall between 45 and 150 feet. That range is useful for budgeting: ask a driller to explain how the price changes if the productive interval is deeper than expected. The 90th-percentile depth is 230 feet, so the median is not a sensible fixed-depth promise.
Delta County has mixed sedimentary and alluvial ground. Most permits leave the aquifer unnamed or use a fractured-bedrock designation; smaller groups name Mesa Verde Group or Mancos. Those broad labels do not identify the productive layer on a particular lot. Compare nearby completion logs with similar terrain before carrying a depth assumption from Paonia to Cedaredge or Crawford.

A buyer considering one of those wells should pay particular attention to recovery and storage needs. Obtain a current pumping and recovery test, then size the pump and any storage around demonstrated supply rather than the county median.
Static water level is the depth to water while the well is resting, not the finished depth of the hole. Delta County's 287 reported measurements have a 25-foot median, with the middle half between 9 and 72 feet. A shallow resting level does not tell you how far the water will draw down while pumping.
The decade medians move deeper: 10 feet below ground in the 2000s, 15 feet in the 2010s and 36 feet in the 2020s. That pattern is consistent with declining groundwater levels, but these are not necessarily repeat measurements from the same wells. For the county's mixed sedimentary and alluvial ground, the cost model uses $50–$75 per foot. At the 90-foot median depth, that puts the drilled hole at about $4,500–$6,800. A finished well with pump, tank, trenching and electrical is modeled at $10,500–$18,800.
Treat those amounts as planning figures, not a parcel-specific quote. The middle-half depth range of 45–150 feet leaves meaningful room for the drilling bill to change. Access, casing and grout requirements, pump selection, and the route to the house also matter. Ask for a written scope separating drilling from completion equipment and site work, with clear terms for deeper drilling or an unsuccessful hole.
The environmental mapping identifies 31 PFAS sampling/contamination sites, 62 historic mine features and 12 EPA Superfund/cleanup sites within about 10 miles. These are screening flags, not evidence that a particular Delta County well is contaminated. A sampling location may not represent a confirmed contamination source.
Before closing, obtain laboratory testing for drinking-water suitability and ask the local health authority which additional tests fit the property's setting. Review casing, grout and wellhead drainage as well as the water sample. A usable building site also needs a compliant septic layout and protected well location. Start with the actual well permit, completion report and parcel location. Confirm that the existing well belongs to the property and that its authorized uses match your plans. A household-use permit is not blanket permission for irrigation or livestock watering. Ask Colorado DWR about new-permit eligibility and any applicable augmentation requirements before committing to an unserved lot.
Next, compare nearby wells around the specific town and terrain—not just the Delta County median. Make the purchase decision around documented yield, current water quality, legal use and a realistic site plan. For a new build, have the driller and site contractor review rig access, the driveway, septic placement, utility trenching and the proposed house location together before those locations become expensive to change.
